However, deficiencies in diet can make nails brittle. Hands are the most visible parts of you, but they also take a lot of abuse. 3. Do not use too much polish remover.
4. Avoid applying sharp instruments under the nails. They might break the nail to skin bond;
5. Do not ignore nails that separate from beds.
6. Avoid chipping and peeling off nail polish.
7. Do not forget your toenails.

I had been working a 60-hour week and was longing for Friday night when my girlfriends and I were set to meet at a local disco for some much deserved dancing, flirting, and drinking. Yes, this was the disco era and I was all decked out in my big hair, platform shoes, and tight fitting spandex short dress with a skirt that twirled perfectly on the dance floor. I had treated myself to a manicure over my lunch hour a gorgeous set of long acrylic nails polished hot pink. I admired my newly glamorous nails as I applied my makeup while listening to the soundtrack to Saturday Night Fever.
After a quick glance at my reflection in the full length mirror, I deemed myself presentable and was out the door to pick up one of my girlfriends. Two cigarettes later, we pulled the car into the disco parking lot, opted for valet parking, and walked to the door.
We saw him at the bar the moment we arrived it was as though a spot light shone on him. Determined to make the best possible impression, we strutted to the bar, met with our other friends and ordered white wine, which we believed was a classy choice of beverage.
After some eye contact back and forth and the occasional sweet smile, he walked over to our section of the bar and began a conversation. At this point I was quite nervous and pulled out my old stand by for such times my pack of cigarettes. As I placed the cigarette in my mouth, this gentleman whose name I had yet to learn whipped out a gold lighter to light my cigarette. I leaned in close and looked into his eyes as he lit my cigarette. Our eyes held. The flame from the lighter seemed extraordinarily large and brilliant. Then his eyes became quite large and I realized that the bright flame was my artificial nail on fire. I quickly plunged my finger into my very classy glass of white wine. The fire went out, but my mortification will live on. So much for my being a class act that night.

“Be kind to your feet; they outnumber people two to one,” so goes the slogan used by the popular Happy Feet sandals back in the ‘70s. Unfortunately, not everyone follows this simple advice. Despite their usefulness, feet often take the lowest priority when it comes to health. This makes them prone to a host of disorders like fungal nail infections that commonly affect the elderly.
Onychomycosis is the medical term for this serious malady that turns nails into monsters, making them dull, discolored, disfigured, distorted, and deformed. As the disease progresses, it can spread to your fingernails and make day to day activities like walking, typing, and writing painful and difficult.
To keep your nails happy and fungus free, here are some practical tips from the Mayo Clinic and WebMD:
1) Keep your hands and feet clean. Dry them thoroughly after washing or bathing and use a good foot powder.
2) Don’t walk barefoot around public pools, showers, and locker rooms.
3) Choose your footwear carefully. Wear socks that absorb moisture and change them as often as necessary, especially if you have sweaty feet. Avoid tight, enclosed shoes.
4) Don’t wear the same shoes daily. Have at least two pairs that you can wear alternately. Take your shoes off from time to time during the day. Disinfect your shoes with a good antifungal spray.
5) Use rubber gloves if you come in contact with water often. Dry the gloves afterwards.
6) Don’t bite your nails and keep them short.
7) Choose a clean nail salon if you intend to get a manicure or pedicure. Bring your own instruments if possible and don’t share them with others. Avoid harsh nail products, nail polish, and artificial nails.
Don’t cut your nails too short to avoid injury.
9) Control chronic conditions like diabetes.
10) Stop smoking.
If you’re a victim of onychomycosis, choose your medicine carefully. Most topical antifungal creams are ineffective and a waste of money while oral antifungal drugs are expensive and have many serious side effects. To protect your pocket and your health, switch to Somasin AFS, the practical herbal alternative that’s safe to use. Somasin’s unique dual action formula helps strengthen your immune system and penetrates the nail to eliminate fungal nail infections in just seven days. Many medications today, both prescribed and over the counter, carry a risk of dangerous side effects and can be very expensive. For reasons of both safety and budgeting, many individuals are forced to find a natural cure for whatever ails. Nail fungus is an infection that occurs with many individuals, some of whom are always searching for a natural cure.
Nail fungus occurs in two areas, including the toenail or fingernail. The best way to provide a natural cure for nail fungus is to keep the area clean. Bacteria worsen if the area isn’t properly cleaned, which is especially true with nail fungus. In addition, the area should stay dry and cool. This can be achieved by always drying the hands thoroughly or the feet after bathing or swimming. Hands will naturally stay cooler than feet, which is why anyone suffering from toenail fungus should consider wearing cotton socks. Cotton, itself, is a very breathable fabric and absorbs sweat effectively. These are great examples of a natural cure for nail fungal infections.
If nail fungus is infecting the toenail area, avoid wearing shoes whenever possible. For example, sufferers should not wear them around the home or needlessly. In addition, house slippers may increase warmth on the feet and should be avoided if possible. Cotton socks will help to ease the discomfort better than other footwear. Once nail fungus is already present, it is clearly too late to prevent the infection. However, frequently changing socks and shoes will help to keep the foot clean and free of additional bacteria that may aggravate the condition.
When searching for a natural cure for nail fungus, many sufferers overlook the type of soap that they are using. An anti-bacterial soap will often be more beneficial in clearing up nail fungus than a regular, or moisturizing, soap. A product that is specifically designed to fight bacteria would have the potential to be a better natural cure.
Vinegar, a product commonly found in any supermarket, is another natural cure for nail fungus that is often recommended among sufferers. Some individuals apply this product to the site of the infection on two or more times each day. Many retail products are said to work in much the same way and often are able to fight the infection more aggressively. However, vinegar is a natural product that is often reported by sufferers as a part of a natural cure for nail fungus.

Being beautiful has always been an essential thing. Nowadays, the importance of beauty tends to increase. It is no longer sufficient to have beautiful eyes, attractive legs and long hair! Beauty means perfection, and perfection implies paying attention to details. Having a perfect skin, perfect nails or a perfect tan is essential if you want to be a beautiful person. It is even more important to have a perfect smile, which means, in fact, perfect teeth. If nature cannot help you in this area, you can definitely look for help somewhere else.
To obtain a perfect smile, you have two choices: the first one is to use some products specifically made to whiten your teeth at home; such products are toothpaste, whitening gels and whitening strips. The great thing about these products is that they are rather cheap. Whitening toothpaste is accessible to every one of us, but the result is not as remarkable as you may think. Whitening toothpastes only clean the stains on the surface of the tooth. You can whiten your teeth with only one shade.
Another at-home teeth whitening solution is the use of whitening gels. For obtaining a result, you have to use the gel twice a day for 14 days. It is easy to use (you have to apply the gel on your teeth with a brush) and it is not expensive. A two-week treatment costs $15. You can also use whitening strips, if you want to achieve a result in two weeks. You have to use the whitening strips twice a day for 30 minutes. The result of these thin strips coated with peroxide-based whitening gel lasts for 4 months. Whitening strips can cost $10-$55 for a two-week treatment. You can benefit from each of these teeth whitening solutions you can benefit, but if you really want to see any spectacular results, you should ask for the help of a specialist.
The results of at-home teeth whitening methods are significantly lower that in the case of dental whitening done by a cosmetic dentistry expert. If you have rather complicated tooth problems or want to have even whiter teeth, you should seek advice from someone specialized in cosmetic dentistry. How can a cosmetic dentist help you? First, the best part about cosmetic dental treatments done by a specialist is that they can solve all your dental problems, not only those dealing with dental bleaching.
Cosmetic dentistry can help you with solving problems such as gaps or differences in color. This procedure involves the attachment of a custom-made laminate directly on you tooth. The name of the applied laminates is tooth veneers. Another issue that a cosmetic dentist can deal with is the implantation of a bridge (false tooth planted between two healthy teeth). An expert in cosmetic dental treatments can solve even problems such as bonding, enamel shaping and, of course, dental whitening issues. One of the most famous whitening procedures performed by an expert is laser bleaching.
Laser teeth whitening is the fastest way to a perfect smile. A cosmetic dentistry expert can offer you the white teeth you have always dreamed of in only one hour. Before you call a dentistry office to get an appointment, you should know that this is the most expensive dental whitening procedure. For a one-hour treatment, you can pay up to $1000. If you still want to get an appointment to a cosmetic dentistry office, you should know that the results are not everlasting. In time, the result of this dental whitening method will fade.
The procedure is simple. However, only a specialist can do it. He or she applies on the teeth a bleaching solution that contains hydrogen peroxide. Peroxide is a component of all teeth whitening products. The difference consists in the amount used by every single product. The bigger the amount of peroxide is, the better the results are. The amount of hydrogen peroxide used by cosmetic dentistry experts is significantly higher than the one used in at-home products. After having placed the solution on your teeth, the cosmetic dentist activates it by using a source of light, usually a laser. This whole procedure takes place again after twenty minutes. Before the session ends, the procedure repeats for two or three times.

Don’t worry- the white spots on your fingernails are most likely to be caused by a mild zinc deficiency which can be easily corrected by taking a dietary supplement. Zinc is relatively safe and non-toxic so sensible levels of supplementation should do you no harm. I would advise 20-40mg of elemental zinc a day (available from chemists as zinc sulphate). It it may take several weeks before any improvement is seen.
You can tell alot about ones heath from hair and the shape your finger nails are. When white spots appear, it can only be one thing, you have a lack of zinc and vitamin B6. Your body probably doesn’t obsorb it. And that is from experience because I have those spots and I now take zinc and vit-B6. After awhile it will go away if you give your body enough vitamins. Your nails will improve and become a nice pink colour they should be. Its definitly not brusing.
If you take care of the inner body, they outter body will show signs of good health. After all, you are what you eat. So eat right, eat healthy.
In healthy nails a cell “adhesive” holds the tightly packed pancake-shaped cells of the nails together. When something damages this adhesive, you””re likely to get weak, brittle nails. Many elements–from cold, dry winter weather to repeated soakings in water–can damage this intercellular substance, resulting in nails that chip, peel or break easily.
We should keep cutting the nail back and clean the dead tissue from under the nail thoroughly. There may be little nail left. When the new nail grows, let it grow. We must continue the treatment until the nail is completely re-grown. Since toenails grow so slowly, the complete process will take a year or more. Lactobacilli taken internally is a beneficial bacteria needed to inhibit bad bacteria and fungus. The lack of sufficient friendly bacteria in the body can result in the growth of fungus under and around nails.
Your nails are a reflection of your general health so it is important to work on improving your health. The fist place to start is to remove as many toxins from your body as you can. The build up of toxins in your system will lead to many diseases including those of the circulatory, immune, digestive and liver and hormones. These will all contribute to poor nails.
The white spots may also be something that you picked up at the gym or during your monthly manicure, namely a fungal, yeast, or bacterial infection that attacks the substance of the nail directly, leaving a whitish streak or spot behind. If you’ve forgotten to wear your flip-flops at the gym or if you’re unsure about the hygiene at your nail salon, ask your doctor to take scrapings of nail tissue for fungal and bacterial cultures. If there’s a pesky organism causing the spots, both topical and oral therapies can clear up this problem in a few weeks.
Nutrition plays an extremely important role in every function of our bodies, right down to the tips of our fingers and toes, literally. As well as signs of other possible disorders, nails can let us know how we add up when it comes to getting all of our required nutrients.

Been thinking long of starting your own business? Well, don’t just sit back and procrastinate, get into action! There are business opportunities waiting which do not ask for too much and yet give fantastic returns. One such industry is the personal grooming industry. You, too, can be a part of this burgeoning industry that doesn’t really take too much skill, yet is sure to make you smile all the way to the bank. All you need is a few basic qualifications and a little space, commercial or otherwise, and you are in business. You may choose to offer any of a range of services – from simple hair cutting for men, women, or both, to beauty salons primarily aimed at the fairer sex providing manicures, pedicures and the likes, to other specialized personal care services like color consultants, dandruff cure, tanning salons, hair care treatments etc.
Basic Qualifications
Getting a basic qualification to flash makes good business sense. But if you aren’t too inclined, you can always hire a dermatologist to offer laser hair removal under your brand name. Sure you’ll be paying him plenty, but you will still end up the winner as your brand name gets built up.
Offering a degree of specialty like male pattern baldness will definitely help you get better and specialized business, and you are likely to attract clients from far and wide. Ask Susan. Confining herself to her core business of hitsutism has won her a regular and dedicated clientele, with onward references driving her growth. Try to get some hands on experience on a job as well – it will come in very handy when you are handling your own clients.
Where to start
Decide the level you want to start your business with. Let us see some of the options available.
On Site
You can start by offering your services at on-site locations. This is great way to start business with nearly zero investment, having to buy just the basic tools and cosmetics to get going. You have to depend totally on word-of-mouth publicity for your reputation to spread.
Home Based
This is the starting level – you can convert a free room to a makeshift saloon where you offer your services. Though starting costs will be low, you will have the disadvantage of your clientele being restricted to your neighborhood, at least initially. Graduate to a commercial place when you can afford it.
Commercial Locations
If you can afford it, a commercial location is the best way to get attention from the word go. After all, people don’t have to search for you – you are right there where they are looking for the services. A decision needed here is, however, whether you want to go it alone or take up a franchisee.
The Franchisee Route
Taking a franchisee offers a great jump-start in the form of a good brand name, experience and the goodwill earned by the franchisor. You don’t have to bother about most of the headaches of starting from scratch. Be prepared, however, to shell out a fair amount from your profits as franchisee fee, besides the omnipresent ‘big brother’ watching over your shoulder.
Going It Alone
Having your own setup will avoid the problems of a franchisee, but be ready to rough it out and just ‘hang in there’ for a few years. Your initial expenses are likely to be higher, and your business will take time to settle down. But at the end of it all, you will have the satisfaction of having your very own business. You are your own boss, and that is what matters!

If your skin is prone to acne, proactive acne treatment procedures are a very good idea. There are many myths about acne including that it is caused by eating chocolate or that it only occurs in people with poor standards of hygiene. These are simply not true. Neither is it true that stress causes acne. Some people, quite a lot in fact, just have acne-prone skin. If you are one of them, there are a number of ways you can be proactive in your fight against acne or even against outbreaks of spots.
Diet is thought to be important to how your skin, hair and nails look so a healthy, balanced diet will probably result in better results than if you eat a lot of junk food. Vitamin and mineral supplements might be worthwhile because many people do not get sufficient nutrients from their diet. Drinking plenty of water, 8 glasses a day if you can, cleans your system and flushes out toxins. If you do not like the taste of water, you can add fruit juice or cordial to it.
Sometimes acne can be caused by touching your skin too much. If you have oily hair which hangs over your face or you rest your chin in your palm all day, you are introducing oil and dirt to those areas and it is the dirt that can cause acne. If your hair is oily, you should use a shampoo for oily hair and try to tie it back.
There are some herbal remedies which can cure or improve acne. One is aloe vera because it contains 20 amino acids and alkaloids which moisturize and sooth the skin. Herba lamnae helps to eliminate waste from the skin and inhibits the growth of unwanted bio-cultures caused by toxins. Radix Salviae Miltiorrhizae encourages the body to produce immune defenses and helps to improve circulation. Dong Quai stimulates the circulation and helps to bring blood to the dermis. That cleanses the skin naturally of impurities.
There are certain medications you might want to stay away from if you are worried about acne. Anticonvulsants, corticosteroids, sobriety medications, immunosuppressants, thyroid preparations, systemic steroids, anabolic steroids, some birth control pills and some cosmetics can cause acne or aggravate existing acne.
If you need to shave your face and you have acne, you need to use plenty of shaving cream and be careful around the acne itself. If possible, try an electric razor because these cut the hairs and are less irritating to your acne. To cleanse your skin, you should use a specialized acne cleanser or something very gentle. Avoid harsh soaps because these are irritants. Oil-free products are kinder to acne-prone skin and products containing alcohol should be avoided because they dry out the skin and promote oiliness.
Proactive acne treatment procedures are important in preventing acne and can make the difference between clear skin and an acne breakout.

With ageing, skin also changes. The changes in skin are both intrinsic and extrinsic. Intrinsic changes are those that appear with ageing of body. Extrinsic changes are those that occur because of external factors such as sun, smoking, gravity and bad skin care. We cannot stop any intrinsic change because that is programmed in our body, but we can surely change habits and reduce changes due to extrinsic factors.
Let us look at the changes in skin with ageing. As you know skin has three layers- Epidermis (Outermost layer), Dermis (Middle layer) and subcutaneous layer that is below the dermis. As we age, the epidermis or the outermost layer begins to thin. The melanocytes (Pigment containing cells) decrease. Though melanocytes decrease in number they increase in size. This gives a pale look to the skin. Ageing changes due to sun such as liver spots or lentigo appear. They are also called age spots. The blood vessels in the dermis begin to lose strength and easily lead to bruising and bleeding under the skin. The subcutaneous layer that gives fat padding to skin thins. This again increases the risk of skin injury. Both sweat glands and sebaceous glands become less active.
As we age, our skin loses its suppleness, texture and strength. With age spots and other pigmentation, the look is lost. With weakening of strength, it becomes easy for skin to suffer damage easily. Healing becomes very slow. The healing may be four times as slow in old age as compared to youth. Skin turns dry and our sense of touch heat etc. reduces considerably. Other growths such as skin tags, warts, mar the appearance further.
Wrinkles appear on skin at all the places. As the underlying fat in the subcutaneous layer is lost, hollowness appears on the cheeks and eye sockets. Jowls form because of gravity. The hair grays and turns white. Some people lose hair and some grow hair at unwanted places. The nails become thin and half moons on the nails disappear.
As with every part of our body skin ages and brings about changes that mar the look completely. Sun damage can accelerate the skin aging considerably and can also cause skin diseases such as skin cancers etc. regular care of skin is necessary along with protecting skin from the harm full rays of sun to maintain youthful look for a longer time.
